Conditions of Entry

CONDITIONS OF ENTRY 2024

All entries to be submitted to the Secretary, who shall refer doubtful cases to the Council; but no entry shall be accepted which does not comply with the conditions adopted by the Society. These conditions are: –

1.No entries shall be accepted for the Pedigree Register unless both the sire and dam have been entered in the Pedigree Register other than females accepted from the Grading-up Register. The sire must be licensed by the SHS. No horse other than of a chesnut colour shall be admitted but white or silver hairs well blended with chesnut shall not be held to be grounds of objection, provided the quantity of such does not amount to a decided roan. No entries shall be rejected on account of white on the face.
2.A Grade A or foundation mare will be of Suffolk type not currently registered in the Pedigree Register of the Suffolk Stud Book. She must be inspected by two inspectors appointed by the SHS and passed as suitable breeding stock having acceptable colouring, conformation and characteristics of a Suffolk. The mare must be a minimum of two years old at the time of inspection. Grade B will be the female progeny of a Grade A mare, the product of a union with a registered and licensed Suffolk stallion. Grade B mares equate to 50% Suffolk blood. Grade C will be the female progeny of a Grade B mare, the product of a union with a registered and licensed Suffolk stallion. Grade C mares equate to 75% percent Suffolk blood. The female progeny of a Grade D mare, the product of a union with a registered and licensed Suffolk stallion, will equate to 87.5% Suffolk blood and may be admitted to the Pedigree register following inspection. Colts out of Grade mares are ineligible for the Grade register. They may be registered as part-bred or in Section X.  
3.Animals bred outside Great Britain must be by a sire, and out of a dam, both registered in the Stud Book of the SHS.  
4.Each entry must be accompanied by a diagram and a written description showing the markings of the animal and must be completed by a registered veterinary surgeon.  
5.Once an animal has been named and entered in the Stud Book such name shall not be changed.  
6.No owner’s name shall constitute or be registered as a prefix.  
7.All entries to be made on the printed forms supplied by the Society, such forms must be signed by the breeder. The Secretary shall be at liberty to return all forms not properly completed.  
8.In cases where the breeder is deceased or for other reasons where it is impossible to obtain the breeder’s signature, the Council reserves the right to decide whether such entries shall be accepted.  
9.Prefixes or affixes to the names of horses and mares can be registered provided such be approved by the Council and such prefix or affix to be the sole right of the member registering or his representatives. Except a prefix or affix be registered no prescriptive title can be claimed. A breeder’s prefix shall be given to each foal bred by that breeder and born in his or her ownership. A foal born to a mare which has been purchased in foal shall be given the prefix which has been registered in the purchaser’s name. An affix will be given to an unregistered animal purchased and entered in the Stud Book by the purchaser.  
10  Animals which are to be registered after the end of the year in which they were born must be inspected by two inspectors appointed by the SHS before they can be registered. (This is at the owners expense).
