The museum is set in 75 acres of Suffolk countryside, with 17 historic buildings and almost 40,000 objects. Highlights include Abbot’s Hall, a Queen Anne manor house, which is original to the site. The Hall has exhibitions exploring home and belonging as well as our temporary exhibition galleries. In the industrial zone you’ll find the Bone and Boby buildings with displays that include crafts, the story of Ipswich manufacturer Ransomes and a blacksmiths workshop. Just beyond these buildings you will find our Heritage Farm, with East Anglian rare breeds, an orchard and the Farm Barn. Further along is Alton Watermill, Great Moulton Chapel, the wind pump and a beautiful river and nature walk. Stop off for a cup of tea at the Osier Cafe and the area known as Home Close, this contains Abbot’s Hall Barn, a 13th century tithe barn original to the site, a display of Gypsy Wagons as well as two buildings with displays of domestic rooms from the 1950s and 19th century, shop displays and a school room.
